The hippopotamids anthracotheres descended from a family of semi-aquatic artiodactyls that appeared in the late Eocene, and is generally considered that resembled small or narrow head hippos. More specifically, the hippos were separated from the anthracotheres sometime during the Miocene. After the hippopotamids appear, the anthracotheres entered a phase of decline caused by a combination of climate change and competition with their new relatives, until the latter genre, Merycopotamus, died during the Early Pliocene of India.
